Process and Data Architecture Re-Engineering

Improving the flow of expense data for better decision-making

big data futuristic visualization abstract illustration

Project Overview

Over time, this large telecommunications organization has expanded services into a diverse network of partners and a global customer base. Tracking and maintaining the network expenses associated with 3rd party vendors presents many challenges including limited controls to maintain data accuracy and standards.

The finance operations group sought a solution that provides visibility into the data flow and transformation logic, removes manual touchpoints, and improves data integrity to enable informed decisions around network expenses with high fidelity.

Client Challenge

The Finance Operations group was in need of a structure that provides clarity into their current state direct network expense data flow, transformation logic, and business processes tied to these layers. Due to poor invoice interpretation upstream, the global accounting teams suffered from poor data quality and a number of manual touchpoints/corrections in subsequent workflows, ultimately causing a delay in the financial close process.

Approach

Assess Current State – RevGen hosted cross-functional interviews to analyze the current network expense process from receipt of invoice to booking and payment, developed detailed process flows of the end-to-end operational handoffs, mapped the technical data flow, and identified the key breakage points across the lifecycle.

Determine Future State – After identifying where pain points exist and why, RevGen re-engineered the data architecture and business processes based on the client’s key objectives. RevGen partnered with the client team to iterate on the future-state design, sought approval from leadership, and socialized with the broader audience for buy-in for implementation.

Develop Execution Roadmap – RevGen developed a roadmap for the future-state implementation, including key activities, timing, dependencies, resource requirements, and constraints. Epics and features were created to feed into the client’s existing SAFe Agile framework to transform to the future state.

Solution

Efficient global cross-team process designed to handle network expense data with limited manual touchpoints

Re-engineered data architecture to improve data integrity and increase visibility.

Tactical roadmap based on the 30+ identified breakage points across the existing data architecture and process, outlining how to achieve the future state solution.
